What's in the name

Now that we have an outstanding product, I would like to share with you all snip-bits on things that went in making of this Product Xenia.

I am often asked why we have named our product Xenia (Greek: ξενία, xenía)
William Shakespeare has said “What’s in the name...? “ We do realize that lot goes in the name. Especially when naming a product and creating a brand around it.

The product development team announced that they have the first build ready for release. We panicked, we did not have a name for the product!
One thing the team agreed on was that ‘PMS Navigator’ was not the ‘in’ name. So our CEO threw a challenge at us –‘come up with a good name for the property management system before NOON’. Employees get to vote & the employee who comes up with the winning name gets $500 reward” (hmmm… in this economy that will go a long way!)

Well, we all got to work. I still remember few names that came up… Bottom line, iHotel Manager, Profit line, RUFUS (don’t even ask!) glad these did not get the votes. With an hour to spare and no name, we decide to put things to perspective. What is the product about? Who are you selling to? Is it a product or a total solution? And as we answered these questions it became clear that our product addresses to the Hospitality Industry, so the name has to be reflective of that. Thanks to power of Google & creative thinking we named the product ‘Xenia’ – 'Greek concept of Hospitality or generosity and courtesy shown to those who are far from home' from wiki.
‘Xenia – your Hotel Technology Partner’ reflects our core value of innovations and bringing technology to the hospitality industry.

PS: We traded our reward for iphone 3GS & a good team lunch :-)

Until next time…
